Savarkundla is a village situated in Gujarat around 450 km away from Surat. The issue we focused on was lions and other animals falling into the open wells and drowning to death. We made a cover for one of the wells with materials like steel and aluminum. I was able to learn how to operate different power tools like a hand grinder and a welding machine. We started out with cutting sections of the cover out of a steel rod using a cutter which spun extremely fast. This took us a lot of time and effort. The Sparks from cutting the metal was burning our feet which made it even more difficult to do.

Then we had to weld all of the parts together and lay over a metal mesh over the frame which had to be welded onto the frame from every point possible to make it as strong as possible.

The next step was to install the cover onto the well which was a hectic task to do as the cover was heavy and difficult to lift.

The next step was to celebrate and enjoy the rest of the day.

During the trip, we also adventured and went for multiple treks where we were not able to see any animals except Buffalos and cranes but we did build our physical strength as the route was not a flat plane but was full of bumpy, muddy and filled with hills to climb up to.

At the end, we felt good about the great deed we did on this trip while learning new skills.

We achieved the learning outcome “Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process” by overcoming our fears of burning our self or cutting our self and developing skills like teamwork and time management skills.

The other learning outcome was “Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance” by helping overcome a very Severe issue which could help save a species of lions from going extinct altho there were multiple open wells in the area and I wished we could cover them all, but we had time constraints.

The trip to savarkundla was full of learning, enjoyment, and service.
