Cleaning the beach

With the city’s increasing pollution rate year by year, our school took the initiative to clean this mess and bring back the beauty. On the first day of our new academic year, we went to Dabhari beach and started picking up the garbage. The experience of picking up the garbage could have been much hectic but as we were more in number, we divided ourselves into groups and spread all over the beach. This could save many animals and their habitats, due to the garbage, the water was also getting polluted and this is harmful to aquatic animals.

Learning Outcomes which I fulfilled while doing this activity were,

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

As we go to a big school, which keeps working towards making our future bright and making sure that we live a wealthy life ahead, we don’t see things how other people see it. Going there and cleaning was a disgusting idea for us but keeping that attitude aside we experienced and learned how would the cleaners feel or how do they manage to clean all this. So living their life and gaining the satisfaction of helping made that experience more cherishable. This also helps us develop or makes us a humble person. We also used our communication skills and coordination to work efficiently, encouraging our classmates to carry on with their work and giving the areas which they need to clean. So during this process, we showed our teamwork and learned some new things too.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

As we don’t do this activity on a daily basis and as it was our first day of school we expected many good things but as soon as the cleaning part was announced, our face turned down. However, as we started cleaning, we got along with nature over there and started working with enthusiasm, it was like a blessing in disguise. Talking about the development of new skills, we improved our coordination skill and communication skills. We came across several challenges, like the beach was all wet due to the weather so there was mud and the garbage was also too much, then there are mosquitos around so taking care of that. As it was a wet place, the garbage was also wet, so we had gloves and everything to prevent germs from getting on our body. There were many bottles of alcohol so cleaning up those bottles and plastic waste was a challenge. However, we enjoyed a lot and wish to clean this beach whenever we have some free time.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

As we were working in groups, we had the benefit of working collaboratively, however, there are many clashes of opinion and there are some people showing less interest in the activity. Still, we managed to work as efficiently as we could and were done with the activity. Working in a group increases the productivity as we could divide ourselves and clean many areas simultaneously.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

Cleanliness and pollution is a global issue now, the number of people, throwing garbage and polluting our streets has increased. The government has kept dustbins but only a few of them us it, there are policies and campaigns made which encourage people to clean up their streets, like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. So we as a school took a step towards this campaign and started implementing it in our daily life.

“Many drops make a bucket, many buckets make a pond, many ponds make a lake, and many lakes make an ocean”~Percy Ross

So we start cleaning things, many people might get influenced and join us. This will reduce pollution, stop global warming, emission of greenhouse gasses and many more. This will increase the life expectancy of the area and soon of our planet. So this activity does cater to a global significance.

Learner profiles,

So we catered to 3 LPs, caring, open-minded and communicators. Caring because cleaning that beach was a step taken to reduce global warming and maintain the cleanliness around the city, so in a way, we were showing our care towards the environment and the city. This shows how nature and the ecosystem are important to us. Open-minded because we tried picking up the garbage despite the hard work and our clothes getting dirty. We kept our negative emotions towards cleaning and getting dirty aside and started working. We adapted to that work and nature so being open-minded helped us do that. Communicator because as we were working in a group, we communicated with each other to clarify our ideas and contributing to the activity.

Overall it was a great experience, helping the environment and keeping our areas clean.
