Organising Committee Head of the Interschool Sports Competition

In this project, I was required to form a team of 20 people and plan out the entire Interschool Sports Competition which went on for an entire month. I along with Shatrunjaya were the heads of this event. We together with other school faculties, decided on the venues, arrangements and the manpower required. The prime thing was that this entire event was funded by the school so we didn’t have to deal with sponsors. Our primary goal was to execute this event successfully with a well-organized team and neutrality.

Being neutral is very important according to what I have noticed. Once you are neutral, people realize you are legitimate and thus respect you. I learned a lot of things about myself as well as the outside world from conducting this project. To be more precise, I achieved the learning outcomes 1,2,4,5 and 7.

  1. Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth – I understood that I am good at leading projects, but have to work more on being neutral. I realized this when people stopped listening to me because I was more attentive to just a part of the team.
  2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills – The main challenge we faced was that not all our team members came on every Saturday and our lack of authoritativeness led to us only doing most of the work. From writing certificates to making announcements. This taught me that I need to work on the distribution of work prior to any event for a smoother flow.
  3. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience – I showed commitment to my project by coming all Saturdays, plus going to the sports department for any other required work. I even punctually attended and led meetings.
  4. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively – On the last day, I was myself participating in the competition and then too, everything went smoothly because we had instructed our members well and informed them of every tiny detail required. This proved how working collaboratively helps.
  5. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions – Throughout the entire event, I made some bad choices and some good, which led to something or the other. Example, I made the choice of making announcements which were a good one as I am good at public speaking. But, clashes came in when my ethical values didn’t match with the school. For example, the topic of getting mobile phones – for this, to not cause any disruptions, we set up a meeting and formally discussed what should be done.

The main challenge I faced throughout these 2 months was to make time to sit and write certificates. This year, we decided to go forward with writing the certificates manually rather than printing them out so that the participants get their certificates on the day itself. It did improve my handwriting. Haha.

One of our other goals was to provide an opportunity for girls to play sports. In India, not a lot of female participation is in physical activities such as football or volleyball and through this, we hoped more girls would come. We were even successful.  Compared to last year, 60% more girls showed up. For me, this was a successful event because along with accomplishing our goals, I even had fun.
