Komorebi (Culture Day)

Student reflection:

1. I learnt these things about the Language used with reference to the culture of the country that I explored.

  • Cultural artifacts are a way of communicating about the long lost culture of a country.
  • Language is an important factor to be included in the representation of a culture.
  1. This is how I attempted to incorporate my ‘Language in Cultural Context’ learning into my project
  • I showed how with a change in audience and context, the structure and content of a text changes by referring to the Haka dance which was once an ancient war cry, but now is just for entertainment purposes in the form of a celebratory dance.
  1. These are the things I did well in my Project
  • Coordinating with the teammates.
  • Collectively brainstorming for presentation ideas.
  • Dividing tasks among each other.
  • Helping the participants on their tasks.
  • Overcoming obstacles during the planning process.
  • Setting deadlines for the team members and helping to meet them.

  1. These are areas on which I could have worked to improve my process or final product(s).
  • Managing a smooth communication between my group and the project coordinators.
  • Managing the list of requirements of my group.

  1. The CAS learning outcome that I met through the project is/are:

LO1:  Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I am very good at working collaboratively in a team, hence the role of a project leader was appropriate for me. I was able to communicate properly with the participants and was effectively able to explain them the requirements that they had to complete. Knowing the concept of the project was also a great strength as I was able to resolve doubts that the participants had, hence eradicating the sense of helplessness. However, I realised that to manage last minute requirements I had to work upon my management skills.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

We had to face many difficulties throughout the span of the project. Some of them include, procrastination from the participants’ side. Me and my colleague project leader, had to constantly remind the participants to complete their tasks at the beginning phase of the project. We also had to tackle last minute preparations and mend errors that emerged through. Because we had the balcony, we had limited space for decorations hence we faced difficulties during the final part of project. However, we were able to tackle them and present our works creatively therefore, developing management skills.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Planning was an integral part of this CAS project. The project leaders and coordinators had the responsibility of planning how the event would progress, what all was required, how were we going to manage all the resources, when were we going to alot time to work on the project. It was highly student led and hence there was active participation from the project leaders and coordinators’ side. We had to assign timings for coming early to school for group meetings or working on the charts and decorations.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Commitment towards the project was fairly constant from my side. I was quick in assigning deadlines and was actively participating in helping the group members. I also gave timely reminders for them to complete their tasks to ensure punctuality and to maintain a smooth flow in the group progress. We did face minor problems due to the lack of enthusiasm from the participants, but as the project propelled ahead, they too started participating actively and hence showing commitment towards the project.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working in a group has always been my strength as I always welcome others to put forward their opinions and hence we all come together as a team to conclusions. In this program we divided the tasks within each other to complete them on time and divide the load equally amongst everyone so that we could get active participation from everyone. We were also providing help to each other whenever needed. Hence, we all were able to work collaboratively to make this a fun event.
