Maths Trivia- Project

Maths trivia was an event conducted for grade 8 by three students including Vaidehi, Radhika and myself. We had prepared different rounds with varieties of questions which tested their mathematical ability. A lot of planning was required to be done as to who is going to narrate the questions, who is going to keep the scores, how many points for each question, how many rounds will be there and what kind of questions will be appropriate for their grade etc. The reason for taking this as my CAS project was that this gives an opportunity to develop communication skills as it requires you to manage the audience and engage them in the activity which you are conducting and additionally I like maths which strives me to fulfill this project with the best of my abilities.

The learning outcomes achieved during the CAS project are the following:

LO1- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth. I have good communication skills so I can communicate with the audience well without any fear which is my strength for the project but I think my planning for the project could have been better which would have helped to reduce the chaos during the Trivia and given it a smoother flow.

LO2-Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process. Due to our exams approaching we had limited amount of time to plan for the trivia and execute it so we had to make sure we utilize the time left with us efficiently to make the event a success. Another challenge faced was the type of questions to be asked as even though the syllabus of what they have learned was shared by us we could not make out the difficulty level of the questions that had to be maintained so we had to take a lot of help from their maths teachers. The other obstacle faced was to manage the audience during the event so to engage them we decided that if a question is passed on by a house then the question goes to the audience of the same house.

LO4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. Maths trivia required a lot of planning to be done which consumed a lot of time. In order to make this event a success, we gave the event time in order to plan for the event beforehand which reflected the commitment and perseverance for the CAS project. Even though I am not a planning person other group members helped me to plan for the event prior which helped me develop my planning skills so in future it will be easier for me to plan for an upcoming event.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively. The group project was shared between two other students which allowed us to assign tasks individually. For example, one person was assigned to prepare questions for the rapid-fire while the other was assigned to finish preparing questions for the buzzer round. This collaboration helped us to complete the task more quickly and made it more efficient as the questions were checked by each person individually. Also during the event, each of us identified our own strengths and made use of them which enabled us to make the event a success and added to the benefit of working collaboratively.

All the planning and obstacles had paid off at the end, this made the event a memorable one and most importantly made me realize the importance of planning.
