CAS Project (Maths Trivia)

Our school every year organizes Maths Trivia for 7th, 8th and 9th-grade students. This time we took the initiative to organize this event. Maths is one of my favorite subjects and during this project I got a chance to explore many applications of maths in real life. So we were divided into groups of 3 or 4, and each group was given a grade for which we had to make the quiz. I with the help of my two friends organized a quiz for grade 9. It took us almost 1 and a half month to organize this, as we also had our school stuff going on. We faced many difficulties in forming questions as we had to make them as per their caliber. To validate the questions, we consulted our maths teacher and took their help in forming the right questions.

I choose this as my CAS project because, during the process of planning this event, we used many of our concepts or lesson which we studied in class to the real life. One of the tasks was to create questions which are applicable in real life, so that helped us extend our classroom knowledge. The thing about taking a quiz is, we become the teachers who spread knowledge and the student who is taking the quiz becomes the ones gaining the knowledge. So in this process, we as the teachers also gained so much knowledge that we revised all the basic concepts again. So this is one of the reasons why I selected this activity as my CAS project.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

As mentioned earlier, we planned everything and it took us almost one and a half months. Planning for this much longer period of time paid off with a smooth event. First, we started with thinking about ideas from which we can make this event interesting, entertaining, and equally knowledgeable for the audience. So this where creativity comes into the picture. We as a group came up with dozens of ideas, we shortlisted them and finalized one idea. After that, we got the idea approved by the teachers so that we can get further suggestions and improvements which they want. After that, we made all the questions and the presentation, we divided the work so that we have time for the run through. In this period of one and a half months, we consulted with the teachers so many times, so that we can identify our errors. We also occupied our free slots to complete our work. So after all this planning and work, we implemented it on 19th March 2018. All the hard work and planning paid off and we were able to organize a smooth event with minimal errors.

LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

During the planning stage, we still had our submissions and school stuff going on, so we had to manage our time and keep a balance between the submissions and the project. So all this requires commitment toward the project because we didn’t give up and continued working on the project. We saw the project as equally important as our other school submissions or work. So this kind of commitment is what paid off in the long run.

L05: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

As this was a group project, working collaboratively was a must. Without teamwork, we couldn’t have done this on time and we could have taken a few more months. We divided all the work as per the skills each of us have, so it a group member is good with maths and calculating stuff easily, we gave him the job to create the answer sheet of the questions. Similarly, I was given the work to form questions for the rapid fire round, as I was good with research. So from this, we were able to complete everything in less time and we also had much time to revise and check everything again.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Ethics is one of the most important parts in any competition, as we were the judges over here and the points table was in our hand, we made sure that we are fair to each and every participant. If we had done any mistake and the participants wished to clarify, we gave them a chance to guide us through our mistakes and we made the changes accordingly. We also made sure that all the houses get equally difficult questions, so there shouldn’t be any bias involved in making the questions. If ethics were not taken in mind then we could have cleared the way for a specific team. This can also contradict our main purpose of doing this activity, which is to spread knowledge, not restrict them.

Overall It was a great CAS experience, we followed our plans well and we came up with a great result. Keeping ethics, positive habits and all the learner profiles in mind, I think we organized an amazing trivia.
