Inter-school football competition

Fountainhead school organizes a competition every year in every sport: Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Athletics. Basketball is my major sport; however, I was really inclined towards football. Last year, I did not get these opportunities as I majorly focused on Basketball. This year there I got called up by the football coach as the school team was severely lacking a goalkeeper.

L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Since I got called for the team beforehand, I decided to ponder upon my strengths and weaknesses so that I can focus on my weakness more. I found out that I was really good at 1-on-1 and long-range shots. However, I realized that I had to work on my reflexes. I started to attend classes after school for football practice. This class helped me improve my reflexes significantly. On the day of the competition, the team realized that a central defender is lacking so the team decided to put me in that position as we found a backup keeper for me. I used to play as a defender in 9th and 10th so I had the required skills to play in that position. Spontaneously, I thought about my strengths and used them to overcome my weakness. I knew I did not have a lot of speed; however, I had good physical. I used my physical to overcome my speed. Whenever an opponent was coming with speed, I used my physical to not let him go past me. The score was drawn at the full time and we had the penalties. I had already played many competitions before for school so I had experience of how to save penalty kicks. I asked the team to let me be the keeper. I saved 1 penalty as it was my strength.

L4 – commitment to and perseverance
The match started and we were playing very well. However, we couldn’t keep a clean sheet. We let the opponents score 2 goals by the halftime. We did not really lose hope here. We still had the determination to succeed. Somehow, we managed to score 2 goals in the second half.
We had already played 2 basketball matches so we were really tired but we did not want the school’s image to be ruined. So we thrived hard even after being so tired. We had a final to play after this match however we still played our best to win. We lost in the penalties.

L7-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We had an option to play for the school for football. We had a basketball final to play after playing a 45 mins football match. We had to decide if we wanted to play both or only one. I was confused about how will I manage to play both as I did not have enough stamina for both. I wanted to win in Basketball anyhow as it was my major sport; however, as we had to represent school so I decided to play both the sports.

Overall, this activity just showed me to thrive hard even in worse scenarios.
