Drums – AS

As a part of the Arts Special in our school, we have to choose an activity that we will have to learn and do for a year. I like music a lot and have also learnt to play the guitar for a few years, and this time I wanted to explore something new. So this time, I chose Drums as my activity for Arts Special. I have never played the drums before and I find drums an interesting instrument, so that is why I selected this as the activity that I learned. Through this activity the learning outcome that I could cater to are :

  • Learning Outcome 1 ( Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth ): I had never played the drums before so this was the first time I played them. At first, I found it very difficult. But then throughout the time that I was learning, I identified that I was really good with controlling the sticks, I could easily play with cymbals, snare drum and hi-hat, these were my strengths. So I then made sure that I made the best use of it. As I knew my strength, I used it positively by learning new rollings that really helped me develop new skills.

As I could identify my strength, I also identify the areas that I need to work upon was my legwork. I found it very difficult and have been working on it. As I know this, I am working to improve it. I have been doing exercises and have been constantly working on this and hopefully, I am improving. This identification really helped me use my strengths beneficially and work on areas that are weak for growth.

  • Learning Outcome 2 ( Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills ): At the beginning, it was very challenging for me to set a coordination between the bass drum, snare and sticks. It was very confusing and challenging for me, but because I was determined to learn drums, I took notice of these challenges and worked upon them. I used to play the beginning exercises for long and hence could understand the required timing and succeed at it. This helped me identify that the challenges that I faced were something that made me more focused and motivated to develop new skills.

  • Learning Outcome 4 ( Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience ): It is rightly said that patience is the key to success. As I began to learn drums, I could not set a balance between the bass drum and snare so that made me feel to leave the activity. But then only because I was committed to learning drums I could continue the activity and only because of this commitment, today I have successfully learned to play the drums. This made me understand that it is theĀ commitment that keeps us going and reach the path of success.

The learner profile attributes that I developed through this activity are Inquirers because this activity made me curious about learning something new, and Knowledgeable because this helped me gain knowledge and explore an unfamiliar instrument for me. This activity made me realize that it is always a good idea to learn something new and explore.
