Psychology EE reflection

Psychology is one of the subjects that fascinated me from the very beginning. Even when there is no possible correlation between the two variables, often using statistics and experiments one yields a link. While I was reading journals in psychology, I found one study which investigated how birth order affects delinquency. This study made me curious as I had always heard people referring me (second-born) as having more delinquent behavior than my older sibling (first-born), but I never thought that there would be a reason behind it. Hence, I was very captivated to find a correlation between birth order and delinquency if it exists. The challenge that I faced during my research was narrowing down the birth order (first, second and third) and factors for delinquency that I will consider. The sources include a lot of research papers and journals from reputed universities like MIT which makes the source reliable. Additionally, I have to discuss ethical issues like using in text-citation and MLA citation.

Overall my research was a success, although I should have explored more than one hypothesis by examining a variety of sources earlier. Ultimately, my research includes three different hypothesis: a positive correlation between last-born and delinquency, a positive correlation between middle-born and delinquency and lastly, and a deceptive relationship between birth order and delinquency. The challenge was that I was unable to find an appropriate experiment for proving a positive correlation between middle-born and delinquency, which made my research less explored but then later I examined many journals and reports to collect appropriate supporting experiments. Hence, all the three hypothesis have been investigated with suitable studies done by psychologists and backed up by statistics which makes a convincing argument. While all three assumption makes valid points, it is difficult to support only one hypothesis. Hence, more research needs to be done to investigate the correlation between delinquency and birth order to get a consistent result.

I should have dedicated more time to investigate in as many studies as I possibly could to have a better understanding. Otherwise, I have made links with the reference of statistics and the theory or experiments. Different factors have been considered which does justice to answering my research question adequately. But as the research has a variety of theories and evidence, I have been selective in deciding the critical information to be added which makes the argument stronger. The challenge was to provide a valid conclusion that considered all the aspects critically. While each method gave different results, it was difficult to support only one hypothesis. Therefore, more research needs to be done to get a consistent result through all the methods. The study changed my perspective as I initially thought that the only possibility was the second born children being more delinquent than first-born. But after researching, I found out that there is also a possibility of middle born’s having the highest delinquency or a chance that there is no correlation between birth order and delinquency.
