Service Session – ICT

Our school had invited underprivileged students from rural areas. We had to chose our sport/subject we wanted to teach them. The activity was for 3 weekends, 6 days in total. I selected ICT as the subject because I had ICT as my subject in my IGCSES and also have ITGS as my subject in IB and I am very good with computers. We had a preplanned syllabus where we would teach the students the following:-

  1. Finding their home in google maps.
  2. editing word files.
  3. making a power point presentation.
  4. Educational games (eg:- tux type).
  5. using Tux paint for creative design.

I was the in charge of the ICT Department.

We faced many difficulties and problems during the project. There were few minor problems as shortage of computers and non working keyboards. Then there were problems like the language barrier. The students spoke in their everyday language which was difficult to understand and they could not understand English very well. The solution we came up for this was to call their teacher and have her translate in a way that we understand. We also only conversed in Hindi/Gujrati and not using any English terminologies. This way we were able to understand them and they were able to understand us. This was a success and we only needed the teacher to translate for one of the days later we adapted to their language.

This event was organized by the school, however, it was the responsibility of the team leader to plan the syllabus and how to execute it. This planning was not easy as the age group and the level of knowledge was unknown. We had to keep the syllabus flexible as if few of the students knew al the basics we would teach them a level higher. few students never saw a computer so we needed to give them personal attention and teach them from the very basics. Our syllabus contained tasks of different levels for different kinds of students.

The commitment was difficult as I had my exams approaching and the sessions were on the weekends where I had planned my studies and the sessions were 2 hours long. So I had to compromise my few house of studies for this project. However seeing the students with such enthusiasm made up for it and encouraged me to continue this project. We had students joining who had not attended the previous sessions which made us go trough the basics all over again for them. At times it felt irritating but we could not send them back as they were very exited to learn something new.

LO5:

This would have not be possible if it weren’t for the team of fountainhead schools students working together. We divided the students into 5 groups each group handled 6 computers/students. Where as I and few other students focused on organizing and planning and checking on the students whether they are able to do the task given and help the groups if any needed any technical help. It felt like a machine where many components are working to keep the system running.

LO6:

It is important for the next generation to have the basic knowledge as they would grow up in a world filled with technology and a lack of knowledge in this field can cause them difficulties in fitting in and progressing in their life. technology is a huge part of the world and a big part of everyone life. It will slowly become a necessity to have knowledge about it to be able to survive in the corporate life. Through this service session we taught the underprivileged kids how to operate and complete basic operations on a PC.

LO7:

The children were from a non educated and humble background. We as educated people had to make sure we don’t make them feel out of place and intimidated. As the team leader I ensured that the fountainhead students are kind and helpful and didn’t show any signs of irritation, frustration and unwillingness in helping them. This made the students feel safe and comfortable which enabled them to ask us many questions even silly ones.
