Sevice Session

As a part of my Service Session, I taught volleyball to the underprivileged children. The volleyball teaching team comprised of six students. I led the teaching team along with another student. We had six teaching sessions of 2 hrs each. We started with the basic rules of the game then moving on to service techniques and ending with competitive matches. It was a comprehensive teaching experience for me. My goal was to share my love of sports with the underprivileged children so that they could play for leisure as not many resources were required to play once they learned the sport.

At the onset of the service sessions’ discussion and approval, I was very sure that I would choose to teach a sport because playing sports is one of my strengths. I play many sports and anything related to sports really interests me.My first preference was football, but since the football spots were taken, I selected volleyball. I  couldn’t  picture myself teaching art or computers. I wanted to share my knowledge and skills in sports with those children. On the day of allotments, I was appointed as the leader of the volleyball team. This was probably the first time   I was going to lead a teaching task. I was not very confident of being an instructor. I came face to face with a weakness and decided to take things in my stride and overcome it. A good leader is the one who listens and is listened to.I was going to do what I loved most i.e play sports, so I took on the new task of teaching with much courage.

I laid out a clear plan much before the sessions began. Charting out everything in detail right from the list of rules and the following skill lessons upto matches which were going to act as tests of our teaching and the learning of the underprivileged children.

According to our plan, we decided that we would start teaching with the basics. On the first day, we taught them all the rules and the techniques to serve. After that, we decided to play a match so that we could come to know where each child stands and what all things do we need to focus on. Planning is important because it helps us to focus on our ideas and decide on the steps we need to take in order to achieve a particular goal.

When we first saw those children play we were amazed. Those children were really good at playing volleyball. To be honest, they were better than some of us. After seeing them play we decided to change our plan. We taught the ones who really needed to learn those skills and the ones who were good at playing volleyball were taught by a coach.

As I  play a team sport, I find myself comfortable working in a team. During my service session, I did not face any difficulties while working in a team. All my team members were very responsible and disciplined. The importance of being able to work collaboratively with others is that you can work efficiently, get things completed on time and get to know more people and their ideas. Without a team, we could not have taught these children as nicely as we did and enjoy at the same time. Each member of the team played an essential role.

The task of teaching a sport in six sessions was daunting. Working with underprivileged children had other challenges like sensitivity. I was a bit skeptical about how to approach the children and make them comfortable so that they could have an enjoyable and enriching experience. I was committed to a comprehensive CAS experience and took all possible measures to make it a special and memorable experience for the underprivileged children.
