TSL Schools Sustainability Challenge

Our school participated in TSL Sustainable Video Making challenge which is a contest and schools around the world participated for this challenge. Participated schools had to to make a short video of about 3 minutes, to promote sustainable development. Sustainable Development means “Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). We the ESS students created this video, with the guidance of our teacher and this video consists of  the measures taken by our school to contribute to a sustainable environment.

Learning outcomes achieved:

LO 2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

While making the video we the students faced difficulty in considering different viewpoints on the same issue and different ideas were created. We wanted to make a video with good quality and it accomplishes all outcomes. I have never done something like this before.

I respect everyone’s ideas and when we discussed this video making challenge, we discussed the pros and cons of the ideas which everyone gave and when everyone agreed to the same idea our problem was solved. As I said this was a new experience for me and I enjoyed experiencing this kind of challenge. It is important to overcome different kinds of challenges because challenges are problems and the more a person solves a problem he/she becomes an experienced problem solver and he/she would succeed in life.

I learned that if any problem is discussed with few people or our friends we would be able to get the solution with different viewpoints. This skill is important the or future also and we would have more experience than others and this is a competitor advantage. I like challenges and more the challenge approach me I will become a professional problem solver. Learning cannot be stopped until you die and a person learns every day, every hour, every minute and every second.

LO 3- Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

We had to make a video and we had to make a plan on how and what we will consider while taking the video. We also had to a plan the shooting as we had grade 5 students to shoot the video with us as they were included in one part. I am usually a organized person. Planning was difficult because the time we shoot should match everyone, also had to ask our school to shoot video for sustainable development.

I learnt that planning is extremely important before performing any kind of activity because this would be easier to perform the activity and the activity would be performed with no problems, and if planning is good then our experience would be even better.

As we had better planning initiating was also much easier as we had a flow prepared to do and I think planning and initiating would be much easier now for me. Planning and initiating would also be a very important aspect while doing any activity in the future.

Initiating is not always easy and while planning we need to take practical issues into considerations. In life it is very important to learn to plan and initiate activities because is full of challenges and to overcome these challenges we need to plan and initiate before its late.

LO 4- Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

For planning the shooting we came early to school for meetings and also we had missed our ESS classes and even our free slots and commitment was necessary and this made this difficult for us. We had many submissions approaching and managing time for this activity was difficult. For me, it is easy to commit things because I manage my time well because I do planning beforehand.  While doing this task I realized that it is not easy to commit things and to be persistent. However, it shows our dedication and determination towards our work.

LO 5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working with others is easy for me because I respect everyone’s opinions and then we collectively take decisions. There were some contrasting ideas between few of my friends, but we all agreed to one decision after discussing with everyone. We were total of 6 members and it was not difficult to work collaboratively because work divides to each and everyone and very less misunderstanding this creates.

Working collaboratively makes the result better because everyone works hard for a better outcome and we could also receive help from other people. In, the life we will definitely work with others in the future and it is important to learn and understand others feeling and their opinions and this would even benefit my career life in the future. Leadership we have to take at some point because some decisions would not be discussed with others, but major decisions should be discussed with everyone.

LO 6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The issue was that with we are dependent on natural resources and which harms the environment and lack of sustainable development practices we are using. We are using natural resources at a very high rate and if this continues there would be no resources left for the future generation. After the activity, we now understand that how our school practices sustainable development. During this activity, we ourselves also did some of these measures like planting saplings and making composts. Sustainable development is very important to teach students and it because of this we would also be responsible.

I feel proud of my school that they taught me sustainable development practices and schools across the world should spread awareness. I also think that this CAS experience was really important for me as I learned something new from this.

LO 7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

The video included the activity that our school was performing in sustainable development. Our ethics played a role where we could not just act and show any sustainable measure even if the school does not follow it in reality. But we took care that everything that we showed in the video was actually followed and done by the school and the students and show the world the truth that our school followed. My opinions have changed after this activity and sustainable development practices is extremely important for every individual on the planet.
