CAS Project – Organizing a Football Tournament

I have always wanted to organize some type of event as I have always wondered how organizing a event works and how goes one manage to do the work. When 2 of my friends invited me to organize a football tournament, I thought that was a perfect opportunity to gain experience in managing a event which will also help me as I might be applying for courses like hotel management and event management. The strands were activity and creativity in this project.

LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

We divided tasks among the group by taking in the consideration the strengths and weakness of the members. I was assigned to seek a company or a firm who is willing to sponsor our tournament. I went from companies to companies giving a presentation about what the event is and why should they sponsor us. This task needed skills like being  a good communicator, thinker and knowledgeable as I needed to research background information of the company to convince them. I need to develop on my social skills as I did invite many people to play in the tournament as I didn’t knew many people, this where my group comes in picture as they had good social skills and knew many people to invite, therefore this weakness converted in strength with the group.

LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Although I had good research and premeditating skills, this project helped me in sharpening them and making it even better because there is always space to improve upon. It was a good thing to be in a group, however over the course of the project we ran into some group problems and communication problems. We had made some compromises but in the end it ended well and also helped us as group improving upon our communication skills.

LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The first thing to do when you are in a group, you need to divide tasks and assignments so that no misunderstanding takes plans, however we tried to divide fully but we did make mistakes throughout the project that resulted in misunderstanding, however it did help us improve our planning and communication skills. Before taking any action for the tournament we decided to firstly act upon finding sponsor as this event would only be possible if we had sponsor. Once we found a sponsor, we then found a weather suitable football ground as it was a rainy season and having a real ground would have resulted in messy matches and unsatisfied players, hence we rented a artificial football ground which is dust and water proof. Lastly printing out attractive signs and poster to attract more players in local.

LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Commitment and perseverance was definitely a big part of the project as we had postpone multiple times because of the lack of players and teams, because of this we also we over budget in advertisement to make sure we got to people and increase awareness. Also, finding sponsor was also a hard task as we as group members were just 16 years old and company didn’t think we were worthy enough for the money we were seeking for.

LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

As I said earlier working in a group was the strongest suit for us as we all 3 had different strengths and weakness which helped us significantly because I don’t think any one of us would have done this on their own. Being a good communicator is also one of the IB’s core components and therefore working in a group has also directed us towards that.
