College admissions officers look at the things you do after schools like participating in school clubs, sports clubs or teams, or community volunteer work. However, our school did not have any school clubs. Therefore, in order to start this and also to promote the school environment and its facilities, we grade 11 students started with school clubs at a minor stage.
Clubs are important as they help a student ( member of the club ) to :
- Make new friends – Improve Communication
- Develop Time Management and Prioritizing skills
- Explore Diverse Interest
- Making a Contribution to society
- Building Self-Esteem
- Better College Applications
- Learn real-world skills
- Learn Teamwork
- Improve in Academics
Therefore; I, Vedika and Taniska decided to start with “Business Club” where we thought to teach and give students of grade 7 knowledge about the business world. We also thought to introduce them to Business as a subject so that they are clear with the syllabus beforehand and make a right choice when selecting their subjects for IB. The club also included discussions related to famous entrepreneurs and the reasons and skills behind their success.
We got around 15 students we were interested in this club. The club was started on 14 of Feb and continued it for a month or so because later we had our exams. The club was conducted in the school itself. Timings – 7: 35 – 8 : 30
Learning outcome 1 – Identify own strength and develop areas of growth
Knowing own strengths and weaknesses gives us a better understanding of our self. It keeps us ahead in a lot of things. It also helps us to grow more. Knowing what we can excel at enables us to aim higher and achieve much more. While knowing our weaknesses gives us a clearer understanding of things that may be holding us back, and we can then work around finding ways to not let our weaknesses pull us behind.
Enterprise or Business Management has always been one of my favourite subjects to study. I have enjoyed learning about the business techniques and tricks and of course the basics of it as well. My dedication and attention to it had yielded me good grades. Also having run an enterprise by myself for my grade 9 and 10 enterprise project, I had pretty good practical knowledge on how to run an enterprise. My partners are also on the same line as I am which makes our group much stronger.
Talking about weakness, so though I enjoy working in teams, however, handling kids who are notorious is not my cup of tea. I get angry easily when the work is not done in the right way leading it to be delayed. Thus, having grade 7 as members of the club was a task at hand.
I feel great that I know my strengths, as it helped me to be confident about what I am speaking in the club. While being aware of my weakness, it helped me to develop ways in which I can handle them making me ready for situations where I may not get things with which I am comfortable.
I did work on my weakness, by communicating more with them and developing activities that would make them involved in the club.
Learning outcome 2 – Demonstrating that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
As the club had members who are notorious, It was a challenge for me to handle as I already said. The first session of the club was helpful for me to overcome my weakness and challenge because it was the introductory session in which we discussed their aim of joining the club and what do they expect. We also had a discussion on the further classes. This helped me to communicate with them, know them and also to make them comfortable with the environment.
Another challenge that I faced was that I had my CAS project simultaneously going on which made it difficult for me to concentrate on this activity. Also, we used to have met for culture day at the time when my club was there, which in all made it difficult for me to be present on both the sides.
To over this particular challenge, my partner – Vedika was always there when needed. She handled all my responsibilities in my absence. Also, when I was not there, we planned to give them work which does not require many instructions rather it requires just our observation. Doing all this made it feasible for me as well as my partners to overcome this challenge.
Undertaking challenges are important for me as it helps me to grow as an individual and also help me to know areas where I need to work. It also helps to develop skills. For example, undertaking these challenges, helped me to improve my management skills and develop way on how to balance workload in a better way. Developing and improving skills like this are very crucial as in future when I work or even study, I need to manage time and the workload I have.
Learning outcome 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning is important because it shows an individual direction on how to move further to achieve the aim. It also helps to manage time efficiently and keep a check on the works being done. While knowing how to initiate is simultaneously important as until you don’t know how to start the planned activity, you won’t be able to achieve the desired result.
Planning and organizing thing is an easy task for me, as I have been doing this since the time we have been given projects. We already knew what we had to know and we also got to knew their expectations from the first session, so it was easy to organise the agenda for each day.
We also had to take minutes of the meeting, so Vedika and I took the initiative to complete that.
Both planning and initiating the activity was not difficult because of regular cross-checks with the planned document and the cooperation with subordinates.
This activity improved my social skill resulting in effective planning which would help me to overcome my challenge as well. This could be beneficial for me in the future, where I take into consideration views of my team members and then plan accordingly for the task.
Learning outcome 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
I always enjoy working in teams, as the workload is divided and we get an opportunity to understand our peers in a better way.
In the club, we definitely had to work collaboratively in order to complete the planned task in the time period with efficiency. Though it seems to be an easy task but with notorious members and us having no experience in teaching makes it difficult to complete the planned activity requiring us to communicate and work together on a frequent basis.
This activity improved my team working skills which then involved communications skills as well.
Learning outcome 7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
So, in order to give the students(members) a better idea about the stock market, we used the OTIS stimulator which we used during KWHS competition, which I think is ethical because we are using the stimulator made by Warton School without their permission for our own purpose.
However, as ethics are the codes of conduct, and as per our morals, this ethical issue was affecting us directly and so in order to eliminate the feeling of uncomfortableness we, told the members about our competition and explained them through pictures.

Overall, this activity was fun. The students were asked to plan their own enterprise with the limited budget and some compulsory things given to them. It was a proud moment for us to see them working hard and thinking like a business person to some extent while making the presentation for the same.
We would still continue the club if people are willing to join.
