CAS Project- Maths Trivia

Our school plans Maths Trivia every year. This time, I along with my two other friends took the initiative to host this trivia for the 9th graders. We planned this event for 1 and half month before executing it. Our aim was to make this event as interesting and competitive for the participants. We took help of our teachers to construct questions according to their caliber. In this event, we asked maths questions to the participants who were divided according to their groups. This took place in different types of rounds throughout the event.

This activity is my CAS project. I have chosen this activity for my CAS project because this extends my learning of the class to real life. This also helps me showcase my skills of management. I like to study maths as a subject because I find it very interesting and engaging. It is very challenging and that is why I enjoy studying it. Doing this for my CAS project has helped me to understand how I can use my in-class learnings in the real life.  For this project, we had to go through a lot of planning which had to be done in advance. Through that planning, we knew our roles well and so we could efficiently work on our tasks. The planning mostly included our tasks, deadlines and resources that we required from the teachers. Throughout the one month, we set a meeting once every week to discuss the progress of our project. By doing this, we were able to stay up to date with our preparations. While planning, we faced a couple of difficulties as well. One of the major difficulties what that we weren’t able to come up with appropriate questions. As our syllabus included topics that the 9th graders did not have, it became difficult for us to find questions according to their syllabus. Other than that, everything went as per the plan.

L1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As we worked in a group of three, it was important to identify each and every person’s skill to distribute work accordingly. As I possess good leadership and management skills, I was responsible to manage the event. I took care of the presentation that was supposed to be made. I also coordinated with the teacher to solve any doubts that we had with the presentation. Other than that, I also had to come up with a few questions. We divided the questions between us so I had to complete some of them and the others were done by my teammates. I also developed areas of growth during this experience. I learn to be balanced in my schedule as this was near the time of my exams, so I had to manage my education as well as prepare for this event. This was only possible with the help of good time management skills throughout this CAS experience. This is an area of growth that I experienced during the planning of this event.

L3. Initiate and plan a CAS experience

To initiate this event smoothly, we had to plan this CAS experience thoroughly. To do this, we started off with brainstorming ideas for making it interesting, fun and competitive at the same time. We had to be creative because we wanted to do it differently than an orthodox trivia. We came up with some good creative ideas. We further built upon those ideas and selected the best one to initiate. Then we proceeded with the idea by running it through our teacher to make sure she thought it was good enough. Once we got her approval, we started making the presentations and planning the flow of the trivia. We sat together in our free time and completed these tasks. Throughout 1 and half months, we got together a lot of times to make sure there weren’t any communication gaps between us. This resulted in a better outcome. Once we were ready with all the requirements, we hosted this trivia on the 19th of March 2018. In the event, we asked questions to the participants chance by chance. Because of clear planning, we were able to execute our plan with great ease and we were able to achieve our goal of a fun, interesting and competitive math trivia.

L4. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

I showed a fair amount of commitment towards this CAS experience. We had a number of submissions during this time and we also had exams coming up. Despite that, I tried to give this enough time so that we could come up with a good event. Even when I couldn’t find enough questions and had troubles finding appropriate questions, I didn’t give up and instead try to work harder and with more efficiency. This showed my perseverance towards hosting a successful trivia.

L7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Ethics was a very important aspect of this CAS experience. We had to be fair towards every participant and had to treat them equally. To make sure I achieved this, I tried to find questions with the same difficulty level for each and every team. I also tried to avoid any biased decisions towards the people that I know better than the others. I was able to recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions in this experience and that is one of the reasons we were able to have a successful event.

As we planned this event well in advance and followed learner profiles and these learning outcomes proactively, we were able to host a very interesting event for the participants.
