CAS Project – Night-out basketball tournament

Fountainhead school has a night out every year in school and a night tournament is held on the night out. I decided to organize the basketball night tournament as I am really connected to basketball. It’s been more than six years since I started to play basketball hence it is one thing I love. I took this up as a CAS project along with 3 of my juniors so that I get to know people. 4 people together organized this tournament. There were 8 teams and 3 rounds to be played to find out the champion.

L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

We were 4 people in all, so we decided to divide the work according to the strengths. I knew that I have good leadership skills so when the meeting was held for dividing the work I took the responsibility to hold the auctions and to delegate work to them on the day of the event and before the event. I also had to manage the rounds on the day of the event.

L3- initiate and plan a CAS experience

To initiate, we started off planning and brainstorming as to how to go about the tournament.

We planned for about 1 month in advance for the tournament. We decided to keep auctions where 8 team captains come together and bid to buy players. We had to take many permissions so in the first week we took permissions from the school. Next week, we planned the auction and priced each participant according to their abilities. The auction was conducted in the third week and all work for creating the fixtures took place in the last week. As we planned enough, we could pull off an excellent tournament.

L5-. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

As we were four people, we divided the tasks amongst us. There were 7 tasks: resource ordering and collection, leading the tournament, creating the fixtures, creating a presentation for auction, conducting the auction and conducting the tournament. As the work was divided, we could juggle the studies and this together.

L7-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We conducted an auction where we had to price every participant; however, there were many players who I was unaware about how they play. I was the person who had to do this job as I knew most of the players. It would have been unethical for me to rate those who I don’t know about their abilities. So I decided to include the other organizers to solve this issue. As all of them were from different grades so they were given the responsibility to rate the players. I proofread it after everybody completed their job. If I had done all the rating then it would have painted my image in a bad way if the people got offended with the ratings so I decided to divide the work to reduce the effect of the ethical issue. I had to ethically so the job so that I don’t leave a false impression behind as the juniors may do the things which seniors do as a bandwagon. So I ethically rated everyone.

Overall, I enjoyed organizing this tournament and it blessed me with leadership skills.
