Attending TechFest Model United Nations

On 29th December I attended a MUN in IIT Bombay. This MUN was a college level conference, so I went along with some of my friends to attend the same without the support of my school. As it was a higher level I wanted to be more than ready for the same. This MUN discussed over a variety of globally significant topics and I was discussing the Yemen Crisis in the most important committee which is the United Nations Security Council representing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island. The MUN lasted for 3 days ending on the 31st of December.

LO1:- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

As mentioned earlier this conference was at a higher stage, therefore, challenging my knowledge and understanding was a must in order for me to make a significant amount of difference and to have a chance to win. I myself spent several days before the conference reciting my speeches and correcting my mistakes. Also ensuring that my strength which is debating is not overshadowed by incorrect information, so I double checked on all my resources to be more accurate and avoid beating around the bush.

LO2:- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills.

After the first day of intense debate, I understood that it is not a cakewalk and much more research and reading between the lines was required. I spent the whole evening researching in the salient way which led to my increase in debate quality on the next day itself. Also, I was appreciated by the dias was taking on feedback and working upon it.

LO4:- commitment to and perseverance.

I displayed both commitment and perseverance throughout the conference because I knew beforehand that if my competitors put in 10% I will have to pour 25% if I want to win an award. Which I did for the record, I received Special Mention award after which I was highly appreciated for my efforts by my teammates and the dias.

LO5:- Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

Often while drafting resolutions and working papers at Model United Nations conferences like these delegates tend to draft their own and take other delegates under their team, I for one reckon that this manner of working is highly inefficient and is tedious too. After one and a half days worth of work I went out lobbying in the lunch period and made my team, we assigned work according to their fortes and on the third day, we had a very apt paper to present. This benefited everyone on the team and confirmed that working collaboratively is effective if executed properly.

LO6:- Engagement with issues of global significance.

Our main topic was focused on Yemen crisis and how this issue is going to affect the world at large. We conducted intensive research and presented our unique ideas to formulate solutions to bring about a solution to the table. Adding to that over the span of the event we had many global leaders and ambassadors their to deliver speeches and talk about issues of global significance. Nevertheless, our solutions were highly appreciated and we were told that these solutions will be sent to the Indian United Nations office and may be considered to be presented.

LO7:- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

As mentioned earlier we were asked to draft resolutions and often while working in groups one may not able to check everything, fortunately I had to the time to verify the same and found out that one of the team members has plagiarised some points, if I were not to have found out our resolution would have been scrapped. But thankfully we removed those points and replaced them with other solutions to enhance our resolution leading to it getting passed in the committee.
